View of Everyday Life Under a Forensic Eye
π΅️♀️ Prior to beginning my study of forensic science, I truly believed that it would remain hidden away in laboratories, out of sight, away from anything I would ever experience on a daily basis. I thought I would simply learn the tools, use them where necessary, and that would be it.
But here's the thing nobody actually prepares you for: after you learn to read evidence, you start seeing it everywhere. π✨
It's in the little things — a smudge on a glass, a small footprint on a dusty floor, or a loose thread snagged on a jacket. Where I used to live without looking, now I find myself wondering: Who was here? What small story is hidden here?
And no, it's not always like in the TV shows. While I do love crime dramas and true crime podcasts, education about the actual field made me notice how media short-cuts or over-simplifies. Instead of spoiling the thrill, though, it strengthened my respect for the material. I now have visions of the patient, waiting, compassionate side of forensic work — the attentive work, the moral dilemmas, the hours of waiting for tracking the truth.
More than anything, though, this journey has changed me.
I’m more observant. More aware of what’s happening around me, more tuned in to safety, more thoughtful about the physical and emotional marks people leave behind. Forensic science isn’t just about evidence — it’s about stories, about honoring truth, about recognizing the real people behind the data.
And sometimes I even laugh at myself when I look at where I've put my coffee cup and notice things that nobody else does. But sometimes, it makes me pause. The work I'm about to do isn't just fascinating — it's important. It's about families, justice, closure. And that keeps me grounded.
π If you find yourself fascinated by forensic science, prepare for it to alter your perception of the world. It makes you more aware, more empathetic, and more attuned to the situations of everyday life that you never even knew existed. And, in all honesty? I believe that's one of the best things this profession has to offer.
